In Reforming the Duke, Laura Beers takes us back to the early 1800s where we meet three sisters who are very good at matchmaking couples with the emphasis on a ‘love match’ and not the usual status and financial matching of the time. They have gained quite a reputation in high society for their success. Kate, Marchioness of Berkshire, and her unwed sisters Amelia and Hannah receive a new client request. Enter the Dowager Duchess of Harrowden who is to become that next client. They discuss their latest task, exchanging views and objections amongst themselves and putting some reassurances and cautionary measures in place. Amelia volunteers to go on the mission to get to know a little about the prospective husband, but in disguise as the Dowager's companion due to the delicacy and potential complications with this case. The Dowager's son, the Duke of Harrowden, has no idea that his mother has employed the talents of the matchmakers to find him a match, but one with love. Follow along as Amelia is faced with a somewhat frosty start to her mission and see if they find the right match.
Once again Laura Beers brings us a beautifully written story from the Regency period of history with all its pomp and ceremony. Laura Beers obviously spends a good deal of time thinking about the characters and the environment surrounding them. Her attention to detail enhances the story and ensures that you, the reader, become fully involved in the story and are carried along with your emotions being brought into focus. You start to think early on in the book that you know how the story will end, but you will be surprised by the details within the story and how it actually concludes. Crisp and definitive descriptions of characters, places, and events add to the pleasure of reading Reforming the Duke and it will delight all period drama and romance readers. A good author worth following.
