The fourth installment in D. Rebbitt’s Globur Incursion series, Redoubt picks up from the conclusion of Onslaught. Captain Jones awakes in the drifting remains of the battleship Ozu, where boarding parties of the relentless alien Globurs soon beset him and the other survivors, including many of the marines. Karl Zenke and the rest of Rear Admiral Pang’s Task Force 13 enter the Alsace system in their new, top-notch battleships. They are fully prepared to face battle with the Globur on their mission to recover any survivors and new intelligence that can aid the humans. Far from the frontlines on the rim, Rear Admiral Brown and Task Force 2 shadow the Peace Fleet, a motley band with some influential supporters, determined to reach the rim and prove that the Imperial Fleet instigated the conflict with the Globurs.
The taut conflict against overwhelming odds, a convincingly alien race, and thrillingly plausible battles are but a few of the reasons to pick up Rebbitt’s exciting space opera series about first contact with hostile aliens. The fast pacing and continuous action make Redoubt a difficult novel to put down and, although this doesn’t leave much space for character development, individual personalities and penchants for innovative problem solving make for memorable characters. While humanity has been scrambling since the start of the Globur conflict, the reader begins to see how the tables may turn in Redoubt as the characters begin learning from past miscalculations and Imperial battle strategies are adapted accordingly. Redoubt is a turning point in the Globur Incursion series, an astounding, must-read series for all fans of space opera.
