Redoubt is a work of hard science fiction penned by author D. Rebbitt and forms the fourth book in the Globur Incursion series. After the chilling events of the Onslaught and the foolish prior attempts at contact with high intelligence life, we return to the charming corvette captain Karl Zenke as he picks amongst the wreckages from the horrifying space war of only a few weeks ago. The Alsace system now belongs to aliens, and the world is full of hostiles just waiting for Karl and his crew to appear. As misconstrued ideas about peace float around in the homeworlds, Karl and his crew know the truth, and can only hope to delay its brutal arrival.

It was a pleasure to return to the Globur Incursion series and see the new world as it stands after the devastating effects of Onslaught. The survivors may be few, but the story is still plentiful and politically strong in its plot development. Author D. Rebbitt opens the universe up wider still to bring us contrasting opinions, strategies and deadly truths, revealed in a well-timed plot that keeps ticking all the way to the last page. As always, character development continues to grow, bringing us closer to those who have managed to survive the horrors of the last three books, and keeping us rooting for the underdogs who are out there on the front lines of conflict. Overall, Redoubt provides a new twist in a tale filled with action and intrigue and is a highly recommended read for science fiction fans everywhere.

Redoubt: The Globur Incursion Book 4 by D Rebbitt is a story of interstellar wars with sustained action to keep readers on the edge of their seats all the way until the grand finale. The book starts with one of the principal protagonists, Captain Jones, clad in a space suit, awakening in complete darkness with pain slicing throughout his body. He remembers how his spacecraft, a TF3H (Task Force 3H) battleship named the Ozu, had charged into an intense space battle against the Globur Battle Group in the Alsace star system in a desperate bid to protect the Flagship of the fleet, the Siegreich. Beams from a dozen Globur ships had sliced through the Ozu, virtually decimating it and leaving it floating like a lifeless piece of debris in the blackness of space. The description of the state of the Ozu, with all systems like artificial gravity, electricity, and others destroyed, is excellent. Captain Jones is able to find other surviving protagonists like his tactical officer Lt. Commander Luis, the engineering officer Lt. Commander Xiun, and others like Sergeant Major Karen Oxblood and Major Sante with their platoon of Marines still alive. This first glimpse of the action is extremely well-written and lays the outline of what the reader can expect as the plot develops into this amazing story.

The author has researched deeply, which has enabled him to present many possibilities which may well become realities for mankind in the future. Redoubt is replete with extraordinary futuristic developments like quantum drives, augmented human bodies, integrated AI embedded in the bodies of augmented marines, literally making them superhuman. Faster than light travel and other developments like electrical shields around spacecraft form a good basis for imagining space battles. Besides the terrific descriptions of spacecraft of many kinds engaged in death-defying battles, this book has not neglected the basic frailties of the human race – politics, greed, poor judgment, sects like the People for Peace blinding the leadership to the dangers that mankind faces from within and without. The cover is attractive. The flow of the book is continuous and the pace steady. The development of the plot is well thought out and the protagonists fit in nicely with the basic theme of the story. The ending is good, though it seems to have been directed towards a sequel. A good, action-packed sci-fi novel with many original twists and imaginative narration; an excellent thriller and deserving of 5 stars.

Awesome read. Redoubt is now one of my favourite sci-fi novels. Very enjoyable, looking forward to book five. I can't wait for the movie to come out, what a blast.
