Red White and Boom by Karl Puttlitz is a novel dealing with espionage, terrorists and murder. With stockpiles of highly enriched uranium scattered over more than 30 nations abroad, Russia has enough to create a vast supply of nuclear bombs. When a theft of plutonium occurs in Russia and in different places simultaneously, Department of Defense Agents Jeb Foster and Max Willard are called to an urgent meeting. They soon find they are about to travel to Russia in a highly secreted mission along with new members Kaj, a Russian translator, and Sorina, who is trained in nuclear materials. Somehow their mission is no secret; before they even leave, someone is out to stop them. As the body count goes upward on those with valuable information, so does the count of those who stole the plutonium. As they slowly find the thieves, can they also find who is trying to get the team out of the way? From the U.S. to Russia, to the Arctic and back, the race is on to keep any more from being killed.
This was an interesting book right from the beginning, with some interesting history about Russia. About the middle of the book, I got a little bored with all the description of the uranium and the process of how they use and handle it. I can’t really say if all of it would have been pertinent to the storyline; it did have some connection, however, but might have been a little overdone. All in all it’s a great adventure story, and for readers who like reading government thrillers, I feel they will enjoy this book.
