Imagine yourself sitting at a table in the best restaurant in town, with a woman in front of you, her gun pointed at your crotch under the table, determined to make you a eunuch. That is how Red River by Bob Guess begins, and it is not the intriguing encounter that grabs the reader’s attention, but the humorous way in which the story is told. An author returns to Texas to sell a farm and residence that belonged to his dead father, but gets caught up in a series of events that unveil the wrongdoings of the past. Can he reconcile with the past as he faces childhood memories and undefined foes? Follow this story that explores the rhythm of life in a small community and the soul of a place.
The characters are awesome and they come out realistically, as though they were the reader’s next door neighbor — genuinely flawed, and interesting — and the reader will love to discover how they evolve through the conflict. I enjoyed the portrait of Radison Jefferies, one of the key characters, and the depth to which the author explores this character, unveiling how his quest to understand his human pain leads to a masterpiece that becomes a bestseller. The character of the prostitute is also well-explored and it adds a lot of flavor to an already beautiful story. The narrative is awesome and it combines descriptive prose with great dialogues to make the story a great read. Red River has a clear POV, which varies depending on character focus, and Bob Guess has the gift of making the emotions in his characters come alive. This is one of those stories that feel so real one could imagine being part of it.
