Red Apple in an Orange World by Courtney Beshear Cooke is a cute children’s story with a wonderful message. A red apple is pulled from its tree by the wind and lands in the middle of an orange tree. The apple quickly realizes how very different he is from all the oranges, and soon “should bees” swarm and start telling the apple that it should change to be more like the oranges. The apple begins to feel bad and worries that he doesn’t belong. Then the “can bees” come along and remind the apple that he is perfect just the way he is. The apple decides to listen to the “can bees” and to the voice inside his own heart.
I read Red Apple in an Orange World to my two young boys. They loved the bright and engaging illustrations. They also understood and agreed with the message of the story — it’s great to be different! It feels like the world is so full of negative messages for our kids, and I’m grateful to Courtney Beshear Cooke for sending out a positive one. It’s so important for our kids to love themselves and others, and to celebrate differences. I loved the end of the story when so many different fruits were described. It perfectly illustrates how variety makes our world so much brighter. I especially loved the last line of the book: “Everyone belongs at this picnic.” I hope that these words stay with my boys to help them remember to be proud of the things that make them unique.
