Celeste didn’t see it coming, or maybe she wasn’t looking in the right direction. Her seemingly perfect life adorned with the perfect husband and the perfect child was deteriorating right before her eyes; even a stranger could see that her marriage was over. Why couldn’t she? Celeste follows the gut instinct of seeking revenge, only to realize that action is not part of her make-up. As her persistent optimism drives her to convince Trent (and herself) this isn’t over, Celeste embarks on an emotional journey to find her true self and personal worth. When her new reality finally catches up to her, Celeste is forced to move forward and be grateful for family, friends, and newfound confidence.
Reclaiming Celeste: Heart of Crystal by Obelia Akanke speaks to every woman ever scorned by an all-engulfing love. A lesson in the age-old parable “too good to be true”, this story is one of reflection. The reader finds herself speaking out loud to the pages of this relatable story. Those fortunate enough never to have experienced this written abuse will still find themselves nodding in solidarity with women everywhere. According to the National Domestic Violence Hot Line, “Domestic violence (also called intimate partner violence (IPV, domestic abuse or relationship abuse) is a pattern of behaviors used by one partner to maintain power and control over another partner in an intimate relationship.” The scars may be invisible but they exist. Author Obelia Akanke effectively portrays her characters with realistic dialogue and moving narration.
