Raging Currents: Mental Illness and Family is Nanette J. Davis's autobiography in which she reflects on her life and the challenges her most beloved people faced. Nanette was no stranger to mental illness and how it can consume lives. Her sister Sharon struggled with schizophrenia, and Nanette was always there to hold her when Sharon lost herself to the disease. Little did Nanette know, Sharon's journey was just the tip of the iceberg. However, nothing could have prepared Nanette and her family when her son Mike was diagnosed with Bipolar Disease. Drugs and alcohol drew him down into a spiral, and Nanette was left scrambling. This book shares the journey of a sister and then a mother who was the caretaker of two people who struggled with mental health. It detailed mental illness's harrowing ups and downs and how it can affect loved ones who also suffer.
Raging Currents is a no-holds-barred look into the hard and sometimes messy lives of people with mental illnesses. Dr. Nanette Davis created a powerful handbook for caregivers of people who struggle with mental health. The narrative was humbling and informative at the same time. I learned a lot about Bipolar Disease and Schizophrenia. Instead of making these diseases foreign and alien, Nanette helped her readers understand the nitty-gritty of these diseases without overwhelming them. Divided into three parts, the book takes readers up close and personal with the author as she shares the emotional and physical turmoil mental illness caused in her life and how having support brought so much positivity in Sharon and Mike's lives. I felt sympathy for all of them but felt compassion as well. This book will be a great guide for people who want to help a loved one with a mental illness and become a support system.
