Michael Heil's Pursued tells the true story of his battle with drugs, sex, and partying and the lack of a meaningful life or satisfaction that came with it. Introduced to drugs as a young teenager while growing up in Utah, Michael tells of how he and his peers used the acronym "YOLO" (you only live once) and how he lived by this motto, especially when it came to drugs and self-destructive behavior. Where others can use drugs as a temporary outlet, Michael could only feel good while taking them regularly - an all-or-nothing approach. He tells of his early lack of belief in God, but how God would never let him go and had pursued him all along. It took a near-death experience for Michael to realize that the Rock of Ages, as he fondly describes God, had been by his side through all his battles.
From start to finish, Pursued is an exceptionally well-written book that shows off Michael Heil's storytelling prowess. The exceptional writing makes the memoir a great read for believers and non-believers alike. I thoroughly enjoyed the thrilling tales of treacherous defeat and triumphant victory and the inspiration that I experienced from reading about them. As someone who finds it difficult to reconnect to their Christian faith, I was inspired by a great deal of the wisdom to be found in this book. The verses from the Bible that relate to the themes in the chapters Michael shares are extremely powerful. This is not only a deeply meaningful book for those battling with addiction but also for anyone needing deeper satisfaction and fulfillment in their lives.
