A young girl's understanding of how normal families function is challenged in the moving memoir, Purple Sky Survivalist: Growing Up a Victim of Illusions, Survivalist to Thrivalist Volume 1 by Deborah Kinisky. As a small child, Deborah felt that she and her older brother, Ryan, were unloved and tolerated by their parents. With their father always running from the law, they were continually being uprooted and moving to a new location, adding to their instability. Together, the two siblings struggled to overcome neglect and rejection until Ryan reached his teens; then Deborah was left to face the world alone. Having parents who were swingers, the lines of propriety were blurred, and with her brother no longer her champion, Deborah experienced incidents that were physically and emotionally degrading. Although these occurrences always left her feeling victimized and worthless, she believed she was the one with a problem. Because of her family's lifestyle, she had little concept of what was socially acceptable and what was perverted. When things became unbearable, a surprising event transformed her life, turning her focus away from her misery and giving her a purpose. It was the miracle of unconditional love, and because of this gift, Deborah resolved to make a better life for herself. But with her warped history, can Deborah remove the colored veil and see what is an illusion and what is real? Will she ever be able to make a break for freedom?
Purple Sky Survivalist by Deborah Kinisky is a heart-wrenching and moving memoir. The account is eloquent and flows well for a personal narrative. It is a remarkable testament of fortitude in imperfect circumstances, and portrays the ability to overcome overwhelming obstacles with pure, unconditional love. I recommend this outstanding autobiography to those who love reading real life experiences of personal growth and empowerment. Because of the mild sexual implications, it may be more suitable for those who are young adults and above.
