Pumpkins and Peril: Psychic Sleuths and Talking Dogs by Max Parrott is the fifth book in the Jaz and Luffy Cozy Mystery series. Jaz and Luffy are back with an exciting new adventure. This time the duo is hitting the high seas on a pet-friendly cruise. They're more than ready to have a nice long break after their days were split between writing classes and solving murders. They plan to have some fun for a change until a murder spoils their vacation. Jaz knows she and Luffy can handle it and, together, they'll catch a killer before their vacation ends.
Jaz and Luffy are no strangers to solving murders and, no matter where they go, they seem to stumble upon another dead body, and with a few helpful visions, they always manage to catch the killer. Now they're alone on the ocean with a host of suspects and have to navigate new territory in solving this case. This setting adds a new element to the series. Jaz has continued to grow throughout each mystery with each adding to her evolution as a character. This mystery sees her discovering a new path for her future. Luffy furthers his own investigative skills by being able to freely roam the boat searching for suspects and Max Parrott makes great use of the lovable dog as a sleuth.
Luffy is more than just a talking dog and is as developed as Jaz with his strong personality and quirks. His snarky attitude and the duo's playful banter drive the humor and make the story so much fun to read. It's always humorous to read about Luffy sniffing out his own clues and his commentary when he's with someone that can't understand him. The cruise is full of suspects but they still manage to make a few connections which has Jaz wondering who's a suspect and who's an ally. The lighthearted and charming tone makes Pumpkins and Peril fun and humorous with two delightful leads that make you want to solve mysteries with your dog.
