Alpha-3 is one of the prototypes in the Project Chrysalis operated by the Advanced Weaponized Projects Agency. The prototypes are genetically enhanced, each has his or her own special ability. They are residents of Zone One until they reach their potential and ready to be transferred out and be useful to whatever purpose that is prepared for them. However, it seems the prototypes barely manage to reach their expected goals set by their assessors, and Project Chrysalis is in danger of being shut down. If that occurs, what will happen to Alpha-3 and her fellow prototypes? Prototype Alpha-3 is the first installment of the sci-fi series Prototype by Alanah Andrews.
Alanah Andrews's Prototype Alpha-3 is built upon fascinating scientific notions of genetic engineering. The story of a group of enhanced humans having their fate in the hands of their assessors and guards is immersive. It intrinsically highlights the different levels of compassion one is willing to have towards their research subjects. Professor Carmen Rhodes-one of the "quality assurance assessors"-is the only one brave enough to be humane towards the young prototypes while trying to get results for her superior and the project's stakeholders. Yet, as the story progresses, it's more about how 'human' the prototypes are; curious, hopeful, but also skeptical and bitter. The truth about Project Chrysalis is slowly revealed albeit not entirely as more answers can be found in the sequel. With an impressive blend of sci-fi and psychological elements, the Prototype series is a contemplative tale about the science field powered by ambition and money, and about ethics and empathy's place in it. A great read.
