Protected (Spirian Saga Book #1) by Rowena Portch is an entertaining fantasy adventure depicting a world battling between good and evil. The fictional story begins with Skye waking from a car accident and receiving a strange hospital visitor who leaves behind a mysterious gift. A degenerative eye disease leaves her vision impaired, but other senses compensate for her ability to see beyond forms. Guiding her on a journey into a world of non-human, Spirians is her faithful service dog. While practicing massage arts, she develops a peculiar ability to heal people with touch. In a quiet Pacific Northwest town, Skye learns her true nature when Khalen extracts a capsule that was planted by The Shadows, dark, cold energy creatures with opposite intentions from the Angel-borne Spirian clan. Skye quickly learns her place in the clan and the cost of her gifts, and is touted as the Legend whose child will decide the outcome of humanity. The power struggle between light and dark escalates to a feud between twin brothers with Skye caught perilously in the middle. There are prophetic dreams, demons, some high-flying times, an accidental treaty violation, illusion spells, wolves and opposing plans for manifest destiny.
Rowena Portch writes in first person from varying character viewpoints. Before each of the 31 chapters are philosophical statements that tie to the story line. The balance of the story is the tension between physical and spiritual realms. However dire life seems, hope waits in the distance. There is a hint of romance without a graphic nature and the promise of blossoming love in the sequel book. The editorial quality and formatting are top-notch with rich language appropriate for all ages. A highly enjoyable read that will leave you wanting the next book.
