Progeny’s Promise by Kenneth Wick is the exciting first book in the Progeny Series and it’s a doozy of mixed genre action. Imagine the Earth as a living, breathing entity. She’s dying and cries out to the Alma Mater for help in saving her human progeny. Simultaneously, a religiously deranged US Air Force general has captured the minds of thousands and built an army; their goal is to take over the United States and subjugate the world to their religious laws. The arrival of an alien being and his Jovaren Knights join the US president to stop a nuclear holocaust and take Earth’s progeny to safety on an Earth-like planet in a nearby universe.
Kenneth Wick is in a class of his own for mixing science fiction, an apocalypse scenario, supernatural events, alien intervention, and a mystery in thriller format. His characters are so realistic you’ll identify - good or bad - with every one of them. Set in the near future, Wick's story cleverly brings actual events into the plot lines while providing a tale full of verisimilitude. From the characters to the science to the military tactics and weaponry, Wick knows his stuff. Add some realistic imagination, and you’ve got yourself a helluva read. The ending of Progeny’s Promise is no cliff-hanger. It’s the perfect closure for this story as it wraps up all the major storylines and subplots while leaving the reader completely satisfied. Wick has hit the ground running with his first novel and I, for one, am looking forward to more of his work.
