What defines a family? Is it a Mom and Dad and children born to these parents? Is it a Mom and Dad with adopted or foster children? Is it two Dads or two Moms caring for the children? Or grandparents caring for the children their children had? Families are big, small, simple, and complex, but they wouldn’t be a family without you in it. Families are the same all over the world: they’re all precious and important, but only with you in it. And, “Every family is a Precious Family, always and no matter what.”
Katie Didit’s picture book story, Precious Family, No Matter What, is a feel-good type of children’s story. The description of multiple family types is well constructed to point out that being different from other families doesn’t make it any less precious. There are many variations on the theme of family: a Mom and Dad, or just a Mom or Dad, two Moms or two Dads, a Mom and Step-Dad or a Dad and Step-Mom or both, grandparents or other family adults as guardians, foster care and group homes. A family is a group of people caring about one another and working together as a precious, loving unit. The story is carefully told with compassion, keeping the language simple so a young reader can follow along. Key words like “Precious Family” and key phrases like “All families are Precious Families no matter what” are frequently repeated so the young reader will start to recognize the words and phrases and catch on to the concept of what a family is. The illustrations are beautiful and help present the concept of a family with care and compassion. Beautifully presented.
