Santa’s been accused of mistreating his reindeer by making them fly around the world for 24 hours each Christmas Eve. He’s also been told to change the reindeers’ diet so they don’t expel smelly flatulence that pollutes the earth below. In Christine L. Henderson’s Please Let Santa Fly!, Santa is made out to be a bad person, someone who should be on his own naughty list. Not only that, he’s been threatened by certain world powers that he might be shot down if he doesn’t comply with their air traffic rules. What is he to do? Will he be allowed to fly his sleigh this Christmas? Should he replace the reindeer with battery power? And, if he can’t fly his sleigh, what then? Will the children still get their gifts from Santa?
Christine L. Henderson’s picture book, Please Let Santa Fly!, is a funny new take on the jolly old elf from the North Pole. The plot begins with the disgruntled reindeer, who suddenly have their diets changed to avoid the issue of flatulence pollution. Then the charges mount up against Santa, and readers will definitely have a few giggles as they follow the poor old elf as he struggles with his mounting dilemmas. The story is told in simple language so young readers can easily follow along. The illustrations are bright, bold, and colorful, certainly adding to the holiday spirit and the building tension between the North Pole and the world beyond. Buried within this delightful North Pole romp, is a powerful message for everyone: “Be Good, Be Kind.” If you believe the spirit of goodness still exists, make a “Be Good, Be Kind” button and wear it. For Santa!
