Please Close It!, written by Kathleen M. Jacobs and illustrated by Ashley Teels, is a fun story about a young boy named Timmy Timberjamb who doesn’t like to close drawers. Encouraged by his grandfather who doesn’t close anything either, Timmy ignores his mother’s cries of “Please Close It!” and goes to play with Charlie and James instead. As Timmy’s mother goes through her daily chores, she discovers that doors are not the only thing Timmy will not close; his room is in a mess of drawers and doors still open with items sticking out. Jenny Timberjamb decides to teach her son a little lesson that very well could get him to close the doors and drawers that do not need to be left open.
Please Close It! is a very short and funny children’s story with a well-formed plot about a little boy who will not close anything, no matter what his mother says. The characters in this story are realistic in the way a mother may choose to use a simple form of ‘child psychology’ to get her point across in a healthy form of discipline. The illustrations by Ashley Teels are very vivid, colorful and help the young reader identify with the story and relate to the characters. My favorite is Jenny Timberjamb, Timmy’s mother, resting on his bed with cookies while the kitchen lay in shambles. I personally found this hilarious because it is something I might do to teach my children a lesson as well. I love Jacobs’ unique style and Teels' pictures that work together in unison to create this delightful short story. I recommend this to anyone with children. They will undoubtedly love Please Close It! as much as I did.
