Plastic Makes Perfect by Todd M. Thiede is a psychological fiction tale about a man who is trying to have the best life with his wife. John had simple goals in life; survive this wretched war and get back home to marry Mary. She is the love of his life and he cannot wait to start his life with her. Getting back from the war, marrying Mary and having their little boy JJ is as close to bliss as he can get in his small island. He has a job at the plastic factory while Mary stays home to raise their deaf son and keep a good home. However, soon the illusion of perfection is shattered when something happens with Mary and everything starts falling apart. People are now scared, leaving the island, and soon John is afraid that he and his little family will be the only ones left. What did Mary do to have this kind of effect on the island? How much longer can John fight until he gives up?
The story is deceptively simple at first glance, but when you start reading it, you realize how intricately detailed it is. I thought this would be a quick novel where I would be able to decipher the mystery within a couple of pages. I was pleasantly surprised by how detailed and exquisitely crafted the whole story was. The author did a wonderful job of creating a set-up that is as realistic as possible. The characters are believable and relatable. John was trying to hold on to his version of perfection while Mary was trying to do the same. Together, they tried to create a life that neither of them had, but they still tried. I enjoyed the flow, the pace, the narrative, and the character development a lot. It is perfect for readers who enjoy dark psychological fiction. Very detailed and entertaining.
