Plaid Frogs Blue Toads & Pink Pollywogs, written and illustrated by Susan Marie Murdoch, tells the story of a group of frogs who start to change colour and grow strange fuzzy hair, extra toes, and even big spots and long hair. There seemed to be a lot of strange goo and bubbles in their beloved pond, and then they realize they have to find a new home because the pond is causing all their problems. Together they all set off to find somewhere else to live. They search everywhere until finally they find a place where all their ailments disappear and they can be proper frogs again.
Susan Marie Murdoch has written a lovely tale with beautiful and colourful illustrations to complement the story. The inference in the book is that one should never give up if things are not right, to look until you can find a solution, as the frogs did. But also within the story is the fun part, where the frogs look in lots of strange places to find a cure for their afflictions. In addition, the story is told in rhyme, which adds to the enjoyment, as do the great characters that the author has created, such as the green frog that turns plaid, or the purple frog with lots of hair or many toes. Of course, there is also woven into the tale the question of contaminated water and the importance of looking after our world. These are matters that can be discussed with a child as the story is read. This would be a great book for a very young reader who would be captivated by the appealing characters.
