Picture! Picture! is a delightfully charming children's story that uses many repetitive words for learning vocabulary - a big parental plus! Before beginning the review of the text, I want to point out that, unlike many self-published children's books, author Scott Ferrell did not use generic Photoshop illustrations. They are unique, vibrant, and very eye-pleasing. I commend Ferrell for enhancing his story with "real" illustration that not only do their part to tell the story, but enhance it greatly. As for the story, Gaston the dog and Gregorie the parrot live in northern France. While Gaston and little Gregorie wait for the fruit to ripen on the trees in their fruit orchard, Mr. Marceau shows both of them how to paint pictures of the birds that he sees every day at a Paris zoo where he works.
This is where the fun begins. Kids will love the friendship between a dog and a parrot. (Even adults will fancy it.) I will confess to reading the story no less than six times before submitting this review. The story reads aloud nicely and it's a book that would be great for a teacher to read to a classroom. With the prose and the illustrations, it's very appealing. Without spoiling the storyline, you may find your children wanting a peach after the story's been read. I would give this book more than five stars if I could. Scott Ferrell knows what makes a children's book both educational and fun. I highly recommend this book to parents and teachers. It definitely ranks right up there with some of the most popular children's books of all time.
