Susan Davis has written an informative book for all pet owners in Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation for Animals. The book is beautifully organized so that the reader can get the history of physical therapy (PT) in general and then understand PT as it applies specifically to animals. It is both a primer for those not familiar with the concept of animal therapy and an advanced book of information regarding the various forms of treatments currently available. The importance of a thorough evaluation by licensed professionals is recommended in order that the right kind of therapy might assist an animal in recovery from illness or accident. There must also be a firm understanding of the goals of physical therapy as well as the limitations and cautions for any particular animal. Author Davis stresses that animal care should be considered a team effort, including the treating veterinarian, the physical therapist and the animal's owner.
Basic anatomy of an animal is explained and illustrated so that uninformed readers will be able to follow areas in which physical therapy might be deemed helpful. Then, the various forms of therapy are explained, along with examples and case histories. Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation for Animals is filled with therapeutic exercises and manual techniques which might be applied once a firm diagnosis of the animal has been made. Davis also gives examples of various equipment which might be used in treatment. For those with show dogs, the author has a well-written section on how to keep the dog healthy and ready for competition. Whether your animal has a disease, an orthopedic condition, an injury or an illness, this is a book which will assist the owner in trying to remedy the problem while keeping in mind the particular characteristics and temperaments of their pets.
