Author Biography

Kat E. Erikson has loved stories and animals for as long as she can remember, and she's delighted to bring both together in Pet-Friendly Francie, her first book. Growing up in Southern California, Kat was surrounded by all sorts of pets, mainly rescues, from cats and dogs to ponies, horses, birds, and even a rat named Ratty Rascal and a tortoise named Aristotle.

Kat's concern for the welfare of animals began early in life. In second grade, she and her "BFF sister" handwrote their first animal rights letter to a big company, during recess on their elementary school playground, and little has changed.

Kat now makes her home in the Sierra Nevada mountains with her two adopted sister cats, who follow her around like dogs, and roll around on their backs while she writes. Pet-Friendly Francie Scores a Pooch is a children's animal book written by Kat E. Erikson. Francisca Waggit wants a dog so badly it hurts, but her father doesn't see how they can afford to take care of one. The two of them are at the last San Francisco 49ers game at Candlestick Park, and Francie tries to get her dad to see that the ball park actually looks a lot like a big dog park. He's not buying it, but he does spring for hot dogs for the two of them. As he's preparing to take a bite, however, a medium-sized dog rushes past and grabs his hot dog. Then the dog leaps into the field and grabs the ball. Francie's concerned that the dog is homeless and, when the two of them see an animal control officer taking the dog, Francie's dad works out a foster agreement for Scrimmy.

Kat E. Erikson's children's animal story, Pet-Friendly Francie Scores a Pooch, is heartwarming and loads of fun. This story is about rescue animals and second chances, and it works quite well. I loved the San Francisco setting, especially the Christmas Eve tour that Francie, her dad and her new pup take, and enjoyed watching how Francie and her dad cope with Scrimmy's habit of turning up at school and his difficulties with separation. Erikson's story is illustrated by Mariel Garcia and her drawings make the story come alive. This is a great story for families who are considering bringing a companion animal into their homes as it explores both the possibilities and the joys of adopting a rescue animal. Pet-Friendly Francie Scores a Pooch is most highly recommended.
