People of God: One and All Saints and Sinners by Edith Close-Vaziri is a powerful collection of poems that pays attention to the grace of God and His relationship with his children. Vaziri brings out the imperfections of this world and how the Saints struggle to keep their faith in a tumultuous environment. She encourages the believer to be courageous while admonishing against conceitedness. Other resounding themes in the poems include forgiveness, repentance, baptism and compassion. The recurrent struggle between forsaking the old nature of sin and adopting the new identity of sainthood is constantly witnessed in various poems such as A Saint and Sinner Day, Difficulty of Sainthood, and Me, A Saint? Every poem is matched with scriptures that can be used for further study.
The poems contained in Edith Close-Vaziri’s collection, People of God, are written from different angles; at times personal and other times adopting a general or scriptural outlook. In the personal poems, Vaziri recounts her own struggles and shares her personal conversations with God. The more general ones mostly contain a teaching derived from biblical passages. This combination of viewpoints makes the collection even more engaging. The added scriptural references are a great guide and an added bonus. The poems are designed creatively in that they present scriptures in a conversational way and they provoke thought through questions. Sometimes conversations are assumed between God and the poet, which add an appealing element to the compositions. By adopting different styles of writing and including in-depth content, Edith Close-Vaziri makes her collection stand out.
