Penny the Pink Nose Poodle: A Day with Zoey is a children’s animal story book written by Dana DiSante. Penny didn’t look like the other dogs in the pound where her forever family found her, but they couldn’t resist taking her home. Her family actually liked her pink nose and didn’t find it as strange as Penny might have thought -- and Penny loved her new home. She loved her dog bed by the fireplace and the toys she played with every day. One day, however, she heard a loud knock on the front door. She quickly went into protective mode and rushed to the door, barking all the way. When the door opened, she was amazed by what she saw. Penny knew the guest was a dog, but she seemed tall enough to be a giraffe, and she had dark eyes and short fur. Penny didn’t know how to react, particularly when she noticed that her forever family seemed to get so busy welcoming Zoey and playing with her. It made Penny feel lonely and forgotten. Zoey was crazy and bounced up and down, and she played differently than Penny. But then Penny had an idea. She talked to Zoey, and then she rolled a ball to her. They may have been very different dogs, but they could still become best friends.
Penny the Pink Nose Poodle: A Day with Zoey is a heartwarming story about a rescue dog whose life is enriched when her forever family brings a new dog home to be her best friend. Accepting a new member of the family can be challenging for a shelter dog, especially if they’re quite different in looks, size or temperament, and DiSante’s story illustrates the need for established dogs and newcomers to interact with minimal human intervention. Penny’s story will also resonate with children who feel different than their peers. It could be their height or weight, or maybe their hair color or texture. DiSante’s story shows how each of us is special and demonstrates how those “differences” are really rather cool, just as Zoey’s beagle eyes make her see the ball so well and Penny’s soft ears are so nice to snuggle up against. The illustrations provided fit the story line perfectly and make Penny and Zoey seem so real. Penny the Pink Nose Poodle: A Day with Zoey is most highly recommended.
