Pen or Discipline by Dominique Wilkins is the story about a mother raising two daughters very strictly and how both of them grow up to have totally different characters. Dorothy and Danielle, both raised by the same mother, bring up their sons in a contrasting way. While Dorothy follows the same pattern of being strict like her mother, Danielle raises her son based on love. Both of them use different tactics to keep their sons out of penitentiary without being aware of what will work properly.

The book caught my attention mainly for the characterization of Danielle and Dorothy. It's a common occurrence where siblings, though raised by the same parents, end up having contrasting characters and they raise the children also in a different way based on their upbringing which is similar. The book is about how each one forms their own character, though from the same background. Each one's perspective on how they have viewed their upbringing and how they incorporate it into their living is also dealt with here.

Pen or Discipline is also about growing up, teenage years when many of them feel stressed because they are under a lot of pressure to perform well, both in school and at home. The added pressure of parents trying to discipline them and make them live according to their wishes and restricting their freedom is also partly discussed here. The book has a lot of messages and is very honest. The book ends on a positive note.
