In this collection of stories, Jeffery Viles shows us that he is a no-nonsense humorist with a distinct persona tinged with cynicism, neurosis, and idiosyncrasy. This book is a brilliant flight of imagination. The title itself, PecuLIAR Fabrications, is an intended pun that throws a caveat to readers of what they can expect from the pages. This short volume presents an eclectic collection of short stories (some of which are fact-based), correspondence, and poetry all touching on diverse subjects from personal relationships to recipes. It reflects keen observation and imagination, as Mr. Viles could find humor in practically any situation. His poetry, which he describes as “words in pictures,” may not go into the literary canon along with esteemed poets, but the sharp wit they contain leaves something to think about.
Mr. Viles feeds the genre humor generously. PecuLIAR Fabrications meets expectations as a follow-up work to The Sasquatch Murder. Both are in synchronized agreement with the brand of wit that Mr. Viles is becoming known for. He is unashamed to challenge sensitivities but he does so in good taste. His fake news and occasional exaggerations, for example, would elicit a contained shock only if you take him seriously. A laugh or a smirk is how you would most likely react to this anthology. The possibility that you may be tempted to put Mr. Viles in a straight jacket will run high. His work speaks to us on a personal level because we are all outpatients in one way or another.
