It is a testament to God’s grace and mercy that the Romanian Orthodox Church survived the years of communist rule and is once again thriving. As George Alexander, Fr. Dr. Jossi Jacob, and Dr. Romina Istratii point out in Patriarch Daniel and the Resurgence of the Romanian Orthodox Church, much of this revival is due to the leadership of the Patriarch. Since 2007, Patriarch Daniel has led the Romanian Church in showing care and love for the people of Romania. In addition, the Church oversees medical clinics, social outreaches, educational leadership, and many more services to the citizens. Patriarch Daniel has modernized the Church while maintaining its traditional belief system. The Church maintains a symbiotic relationship with the current government of Romania. Communism left the population poor and needy, but the Church has stepped up to the plate and provided for the poor and needy.
To my shame, I must admit that I did not know the Romanian Orthodox Church still existed. However, George Alexander, Fr. Dr. Jossi Jacob, and Dr. Romina Istratii bring the vitality of the Church to life through Patriarch Daniel and the Resurgence of the Romanian Orthodox Church. The workings of this ancient denomination in the modern age are fascinating. The love and concern for the people shown by Patriarch Daniel and the other church leaders is a pattern that other denominations need to follow. Knowing the mind of Christ and putting it to use to lead the Church is invaluable. The Patriarch ensures that the Orthodox faith is maintained while modern technology helps take care of the needs of the people. Too often, churches speak a good game but don’t follow through by helping those in need. Patriarch Daniel sees that action is imperative, and the Church is active in caring for those in need. The Patriarch stated, “It is not enough to meet in prayer, but also in action.”
