In Parenting with Kindness and Consequences by Barbara Frandsen, we find cute imaginary letters from the young children and babies in Frandsen's life beginning each chapter, and sweet pictures and helpful illustrations accompany the text. Frandsen explains the concepts of child development and behavior in scientific, emotional, and relational terms. She discusses nurturing intrafamily relationships, the importance of giving and community, and other essential topics, like babywear, nursing, sleep cycles, safety, storytelling, and the harmonization of races and cultures. Frandsen provides sample questions for starting conversations with children about bullying. Finally, she uses examples she’s seen from her great-grandchildren to illustrate the effects of positive parenting.
Barbara Frandsen provides a treasure trove of information for parents! Presented in an informational tone, parents and caregivers will learn the answers to many of their questions and gather new techniques, too. Frandsen offers better ways to communicate with a baby or child and models ways to respond to their actions and reactions to achieve the desired result. She provides tips for developing empathy early on and helping children express themselves naturally. Frandsen helps us understand how to establish boundaries and the consequences for crossing the limits without risking the child’s emotional responsiveness. We can feel comfortable taking her seasoned advice, as she is a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother with decades of personal and professional experience. Parenting with Kindness and Consequences is an excellent book for parents and caregivers seeking alternate, progressive ways to raise emotionally stable and self-regulating children.
