Overwhelmed and Undernourished: Use Food as Medicine and Turn Your Life Around is a great introduction to holistic health care. The author Karen Thomas went through several years of health problems, as did her husband. She happened to watch a movie on Netflix called Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, which was a testimonial of a man’s return to health through juicing. Soon after, by chance or coincidence or divine intervention, she ran into a friend while vacationing, who informed her that she needed to see a functional medicine doctor and was able to run some tests on her to determine the source of her problems. This meeting began her journey back to health through nutrition.
Karen had been sleeping many hours every day, in fact she could not be active for even an hour without needing to sleep. What had happened was that her body was rejecting some common foods, causing her not to absorb their nutrients, which led to malnutrition - even though she had sufficient money to eat properly and thought that she was doing so. She had been overwhelmed, first by her husband’s severe health problems and then her own.
Since many doctors do not study nutrition or make recommendations involving it, people in her situation often have to do their own research and be their own patient advocate. I highly recommend Overwhelmed and Undernourished for anyone who is sick and tired seemingly without a cause. Lastly, I know the information in this book is valuable because I attended a similar school to that which the author finally attended, and greatly improved my own health through nutritional measures. This book will give you new hope for feeling well.
