It’s the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House’s revival of Wagner’s The Ring, and things aren’t going well during rehearsals. New Yorker Julia Kogan replaces the concertmaster, Ben Masterson, after his arm is injured in a hit-and-run, but it seems that wherever she goes, trouble follows. People keep dying. First, it was The Ring’s director, Yves Chauvet, whom almost everyone in the company despised, and then it was one of the lead performers, Andres Aaberg, whom everyone adored. Due to her amateur sleuth status in New York City, Julia is asked by the police to assist with their search. Julia isn’t as enthusiastic about investigating as she doesn't want to endanger herself or her family. However, when the unthinkable happens, she rushes to help, but is she too late? You’ll have to read Erica Miner’s Overture to Murder.

I love old-fashioned murder mysteries in which the reader plays detective by trying to solve the case before the officials do. In Overture to Murder, a violinist herself for 21 years at the world-renowned Metropolitan Opera, the author Erica Miner introduces a fascinating cast of characters; anyone could have done it. I was thrilled trying to guess who, but the various red herrings along the way almost put me off track. It was brilliant! At the start of every chapter, opera lovers will appreciate the snippets from various Wagner works. I was captivated by how Julia dealt with ethical issues relating to her family while still fulfilling her role in the orchestra and trying to solve the case. What a wonderful book! I loved it. I was enraptured by this story from cover to cover; mystery lovers of all ages will enjoy it.
