Out of Time is the second book in the Wrinkly Bits series by Gail Cushman, an enthralling romance with exceptionally written characters, a great plot, and enticing prose. Mainstream romances often feature characters who are young and in the bloom of youth or in mid-life years, but in this novel, Cushman presents a couple, Griff and Audrey, who have been married for forty-eight years. When Audrey first meets Logan Hall, a retired podiatrist and widower from Portland, Oregon, she unknowingly knocks his socks off. They both share similar interests in health and exercise, and the bond between them becomes very strong. Logan wants to get Audrey away from Griff. It is up to Audrey to choose if the adventure trip with her husband will strengthen her relationship with the man she married almost fifty years ago or whether it will put her into the arms of a stranger.
Out of Time is one of those rare books that keep readers turning the pages. The descriptive nature of the prose is mixed with the author’s ability to weave beautiful dialogues to create an enjoyable reading experience. The portraits of the characters are perfectly painted and readers understand who they are, what they are passionate about, and, most importantly, what they feel in the very depths of their being. Logan is determined and this beefs up the plot. The twists in the story are manifold and I enjoyed the strong plot points, including Phyllis’s Academy of Romance, a venture inspired by the desire to help Griff learn the art of romance. There is adventure, love, and an exciting journey that each of the key characters must undergo. Gail Cushman is a gifted storyteller who allows her characters to come alive through each page of the story. This book offered me an unforgettable reading experience and a memorable lesson in the adventure of love. It is perfect for a book club.
