Out Of The Woods is a work of fiction in the fantasy, urban drama, and mystery sub-genres, and was penned by author B. B. Swann. This highly engaging novel is written for the mature end of the young adult spectrum and does contain some fantasy violence and mild sexual content. Our protagonist is Zaidyn Mitchell, who discovers at the tender age of seventeen that he belongs to a magical race, and must work to keep his new identity secret from the normal humans he knows. But one of these humans is Piper Duke, the girl he’s fallen for, so when Zaidyn gets involved with her and a mission to develop the nearby woodlands, conflicts arise which are far bigger than he could have realized.
Author B. B. Swann has crafted a truly delightful magical fantasy drama that mixes contemporary themes and urban realities with the natural, magical world. This clash provides some excellent thematic content and crises for the protagonists to overcome, and the author brings about these juxtapositions with some great descriptive language and technique. I also really enjoyed the dialogue, which I felt characterized the central pair well and gave us great insight into their relationship as it develops from stage to stage. This is a mature YA novel about standing up for your feelings and beliefs, and the plot delivers some excellent twists and satisfying conclusions as it heats up near the end. Overall, I would certainly recommend Out Of The Woods for urban fantasy and teen romance fans looking for an accomplished ethereal read.
