Our Military Family is a children’s picture book written by Suzan Johnson and illustrated by Sana Freeman. Harmony’s mom is in active service in the US Army. She’s on her tour of duty right now, so Harmony, her dad and her brother, Dominic, send her care boxes filled with her favorite stuff, letters from each of them and pictures. Dad does a great job of filling in for their mom. He makes pancakes and tasty food, reads them stories at night and goes with them to the park on weekends. Grandma Pam helps Harmony and Dominic with their homework during the week, and Aunt Jean and Uncle Ivan help Dad make sure every ride Harmony and Dominic need is covered. They all miss Mom, but Harmony and Dominic are so proud of her, and they love when she’s able to come home on visits. They can’t wait until her tour of duty is over next year, and she can work locally. Until then, Dad and their family have it covered.
Our Military Family shares what it’s like for the thousands of children across the nation whose mothers and fathers are in the Armed Forces. I loved how Johnson shows that Harmony and Dominic’s family is so much more than their dad and mom. Seeing how their other relatives work to help them get through Mom’s tour of duty is so inspiring. Our Military Family is an ideal selection for reading time which provides support for military kids like Harmony and Dominic. It also highlights the sacrifices and adaptations military families make to serve our country. With knowledge and awareness, kids can build empathy for those kids who are missing a mom or dad right now. Sana Freeman’s illustrations hit the mark brilliantly. They’re brightly colored and bring the story to life. I particularly liked the pictures showing the family at the park and welcoming home Mom on one of her visits. Johnson’s story is written in language suitable for new readers to read on their own as well. Our Military Family is most highly recommended.
