Origins of Innovation: Ancient (R)evolutions in Perspective is a work of non-fiction based on the history of innovation and invention, and was penned by author B.J.G. van der Kooij. From the technological perspective at which we now stand, it seems difficult to imagine ancient times and the seemingly humble beginnings of man. This books takes us there and reveals the idea that mankind’s innovative spirit has been with us since those early dawns, and that many of the social, economic and ecological concerns that we have today were also expressed by the brilliant minds of the past. Journeying through different civilizations across the world, the author draws excellent parallels with the world of today.
This is an in-depth read and it certainly covers a lot of incredible ground in the different sections, which include specific foci on the origins of cognitive thought from prehistoric mammals, the effects of climate then and now, technology, religion, society and the development of civilization itself. Author B.J.G. van der Kooij leads the way by expounding on some truly excellent research and delivering the facts and discoveries in a style which make them more accessible to the average reader and easier to understand. I enjoyed the fact that this was so much more than a log of inventions and ideas, but a genuine exploration of how the cognition of those ideas came about. Overall, I would highly recommend Origins of Innovation: Ancient (R)evolutions in Perspective to social anthropologists and historians alike.
