Order of Avalon is a work of fiction in the science fiction, fantasy, action, and battleground sub-genres, and was penned by author duo Robert Slaughter and Jerry Brown. We find ourselves thrown into the tension between the austere Aurelian Empire and the wild Thracian barbarians as the magical world around us threatens to fall out of balance. It’s up to a band of newly-bonded figures from different factions to mix their skills together if they have any chance of avoiding all-out war. Personal sacrifice, tests of strength, and amazing discoveries await as these enigmatic characters come together, discovering solidarity, romance, intrigue, and magic along the way.
Author team Robert Slaughter and Jerry Brown have crafted a sweeping and engaging novel that begins with all the base elements which a fantasy fan could want from their fiction but then develops into a whole lot more. At the opening, this felt like a Black Library work, but the worldbuilding takes on a life of its own as we discover deeper details on different factions and characters. I also really enjoyed the focus on characters of different alignments and atypical heroes and villains, most notably Gastuzio, who was the breakout star of the show for me by a good stretch. There is a cinematic quality to the descriptive techniques which makes for some really stunning battle moments, and I found the dialogue to be slick and witty, which undercuts the often grim realities of war-torn life well. Overall, I would highly recommend Order of Avalon to fantasy fans, Warhammer and D&D enthusiasts alike.
