Operation Space Cats: The Rescue Mission is a children’s book written by Lesa McKee and illustrated by Heather E. Culler. Ten-year-old Darla’s parents mysteriously disappear whilst on a mission in outer space, visiting the planet Candar. When news of their disappearance is brought to the attention of the family cat, Tebbs, he calls a meeting of the neighborhood cats to embark on a rescue mission to find Darla's parents and bring them home. With so many cats volunteering, each with their own unique set of skills, it is hard for Tebbs to choose his team, but the mission is quickly put into action once his decision is made. While secretly stowing away on Granny and Darla’s rocket ship, they shoot off into outer space and soon discover that the mission is not as easy as they had thought. Only quick thinking, some skillful action, and a few prayers will bring them all back home safely.
I was easily able to read Lesa McKee’s captivating story in one sitting. The illustrations were second to none, bringing this suspenseful, yet humorous book to life. I especially enjoyed how Operation Space Cats: The Rescue Mission showed each cat having a different and unique personality, along with various strengths and weaknesses. Their ability to love another species is almost unconditional, and when a surprise appearance occurs from one species in particular, I almost broke a rib from laughter. Well-written, imaginative and filled with positive messages and hope, I wholeheartedly recommend Operation Space Cats: The Rescue Mission to a younger audience aged 6-10 years, as it not only encourages children to enjoy what they are reading, but also see how far the imagination can be stretched, while utilizing their laughing gear to the fullest.
