One of Our Gorillas is Missing!—A School of Animal Magic Adventure, Book 5 is the story of a silverback gorilla. The gorilla, named Artemus Quinn, leads the School of Animal Magic. The book begins with a lesson that Quinn is teaching to his animal students about lead poisoning. After he dismisses his class, he temporarily leaves the school to search for his nephew, Kembi, who has disappeared. But then Quinn also goes missing and other animals at the school go out to discover why their friends are vanishing. They find who kidnapped Kembi and, working together, attempt to rescue him. There is an addendum that tells readers about the danger of lead poisoning to birds, along with encouragement to help gorillas. This book is part of a series by author Burt Kempner. The book is illustrated by Cal Howard.
One of Our Gorillas is Missing! is a charming and instructive book for children. It’s a fine example of animals working together for a good and common cause, with the implied idea that humans should also learn to cooperate in their endeavors. The anthropomorphic animals are delightful. I laughed out loud at the contribution of a certain, shall we say, aromatic animal. Author Burt Kempner clearly cares about both animals and the environment. The illustrations by Cal Howard are beautiful and accompany the text well. Kempner doesn’t say what age group he intends to reach, but early readers could easily handle it. Children who can’t yet read would also enjoy having it read to them.
