One Last Good Day (Eelings’ Rare Earth, Book 1) by Kimberly Coleman is set in the sleepy small town of Moira, Texas. The Eeling brothers, Warren and Rich, argue about money, their land deed, and about moving to Dallas for a better life. Left by his wife, their neighbor Jaden West-a disabled vet with prosthetic legs-is having a relationship with another neighbor, Lara Duggans. Never having spoken a word since her terrible accident when she was a kid, Lara lives with her controlling mother, Pearl, who harbors resentment towards one of the Eelings and the town’s moneyed resident, Aus Merchant. No, nothing really happens in Moira, until Merchant and his accomplice, Ross Cowart, run into trouble with their secret dealings. An unlikely chain reaction causes a brother's betrayal, the further discovery about the town's mineral rights and other buried secrets.
An ordinary small town often has extraordinary secrets. Warren Eeling seems to be the most or only grounded protagonist; a man trying to do right by his brother and his neighbors. Not even the town hero Jaden West holds a candle to him. The characters are unapologetically distinct and credible. Their predicaments are intriguing-and in a sense, tragic-as are their reactions to them, tempting readers to figure out their tormentors’ intentions or predict the outcomes well before the reveal. The well thought out plot shines through a clear narrative where suspense and small-town drama are rife. All in all, One Last Good Day is a short read that has a lot of depth and undisguised raw emotions. This is a commendable first book for the Eelings’ Rare Earth series from Kimberly Coleman.
