Oliver and Jumpy, Stories 10-12 (Oliver and Jumpy, the Cat series) by Werner Stejskal is an adventure series for kids where they can join Oliver, the elegant tomcat, Jumpy the kangaroo, and their other animal friends in these three short stories. The adventures entitled 'Kite High', 'Unhappy Dog' and 'Butterfly Trouble' not only take kids through exciting adventures, but also convey wonderful messages to young readers. In 'Unhappy Dog,' we see a bored dog barking at Oliver because he wants to play. Jumpy lets him out and they have a great time playing together. In 'Kite High,' readers see Oliver and Jumpy making a wooden carriage with a sail on it, and in 'Butterfly Trouble,' a butterfly asks Oliver for help from a boy who is trying to catch it and put it in a jar.
All three stories are delightful and have excitement and fun in them. The illustrations are bright and colorful, and they breathe life into the characters and tales. The book will make a good bedtime read as the stories are short and sweet, have beautiful illustrations, and also convey a good message. It is also good for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries. I like the author's thought of inviting kids to email her with their idea of an adventure so that she can write more adventure stories. It helps kids to imagine and become more adventurous when it comes to creative thinking. It's the kind of book that will leave you with a feeling of warmth and happiness.
