At first I wasn't sure what to expect before opening Off the Path and Straight Into the Woods by C.L. Martin because the description read, "A whole new approach to poetry." Of course, wanting to know what that meant, I dived right in and, sure enough, it was different. The lines to the poems are lined up across three columns but you can also find meaning reading them down the column. How creative!

I could relate to the poem titled "Scars on My Hands" with the lines, "There are scars on my hands from a cat I tried to get in from the cold." Any of those readers who have cats or tried to rescue cats can both visualize and feel this scenario. A particularly nice poem contains the lines, "The old trees are scared, the highway grows nearer" when you read the column down instead of left to right. Can't you just picture this? It summons up an image of trees having feelings as they are being cut down to make room for a new road somewhere.

C.L. Martin delivers 27 enjoyable pieces of poetry in Off the Path and Straight Into the Woods. I really like what Martin said in the intro: "I believe poetry is created and experienced daily by everyone..." Poetry in some sort lives in all of us. I tend to believe this is true and I think this book helps us see better how poetry is all around us.
