In Of Power and Pain: Detectives Daniels and Remalla Book 5 by J.T. Bishop, Detective Aaron Remalla struggles with PTSD after a near-death experience at the hands of Victor D’Mato and Allison Albright, who drugged him and is apparently pregnant with his child. A psychopathic follower of Victor, Margaret Redstone, escaped from a psychiatric facility, and Remalla and his partner are constantly looking over their shoulders for her. Captain Lozano assigns a murder case to them, and they find the victim lying on the kitchen floor with her hair and clothes intentionally arranged. They find a photo of her and Victor with a note saying “For Margaret” at the crime scene. Is Margaret responsible for the murder or does she have a follower who kills for her? Allison would be able to help them, but they are reluctant to contact her because of the upcoming trial where Remalla is going to testify against her.
Of Power and Pain by J.T. Bishop is complicated and enthralling. Different tales are intertwined without making me feel there are too many characters to remember. The story is fast-paced and kept me on the edge of my seat. I kept turning pages and could not put the book down. There were no dull moments and the story was full of action. There were so many different events that unfolded without losing the main thread of the story. The characters were perfectly described, and I could relate to them as each had a distinct background and personality. The story was unpredictable, well written, and managed to exceed my expectations, with nothing that I had anticipated, especially at the end.
