Obadiah Spelter vs. Stephanie Meyer & Her Hepatic Majesty is a short story by Y.T. Whitemansson. Francis, a dorky looking doctor, shares an apartment with Obadiah, a misfit who never succeeds at anything he does. Francis dreams that something is biting his neck and wakes to find scratches on it. He sees a female vampire named Tinia hiding in his closet and agrees to give her blood in exchange for sex. Obadiah suspects Francis is up to something when he begins to behave oddly and spies on him. The thing that he least expected to find while snooping makes Obadiah think of religion and his own purpose in life. He sets out to save his roommate but wonders if it is too late. Francis also believes Obadiah’s behaviour is becoming a little weirder each day and tries to avoid him.
I like the inventive approach Y.T. Whitemansson presented in Obadiah Spelter vs. Stephanie Meyer & Her Hepatic Majesty. This unusual novella mixes vampires, snails, infectious worms, religion and hallucinations with an ending that was rather surprising too. The roommates, Obadiah and Francis, are definitely The Odd Couple with strange personalities, but they were both weak and strong when it suited them. The author writes in an unembellished and unhurried manner, making the sixteen-page story move at a leisurely pace with its ample details. Author Y.T. Whitemansson’s novella will make a very quick read when you are on the go, or need something light and distracting to pass the time.
