Nuclear Option by Dorothy Van Soest is a powerful tale that features ordinary people taking on big corporations and governments in the fight against an insidious nuclear option. It is a great read for fans of sleuth novels and follows Sylvia Jensen, an alcoholic who also has an affair with an atomic veteran and a fellow activist in the nuclear disarmament movement. Now fully recovered from her drinking problems and at seventy-seven, Sylvia is pulled back into the fight by Corey, the troubled son of the atomic veteran. Lives are in danger and to save Corey’s and others’ lives, she teams up with an indefatigable reporter, J.B. Harrell, to uncover a mystery that poses an enormous threat to life.
What is fascinating about this narrative is how the author creates heroes from ordinary people, people who refuse to allow the greed and cruelty of those who finance atomic projects to go unchecked. The setting spans decades and readers encounter some sophisticated characters that are well-developed. I loved Sylvia from the very beginning and I enjoyed how deeply flawed she is. But there is something very intriguing about her — the strong desire to make things better, both for herself and for others. This novel combines elements of a great thriller, sleuth, romance, and social issues and weaves them into a tale that is hard to put down. Nuclear Option by Dorothy Van Soest is not just an entertaining novel but a story that inspires serious thinking in readers; one with a prophetic message that needs to be heeded.
