Now You See It is the third of the Grace Street Mystery series by Jane Tesh. It's a lovely book that features Private Investigator David Randall. Randall is still reeling from the death of his daughter and he takes on cases to distract himself from the pain, as well as to support his own meager living arrangements. This time, Randall is hired to find a missing diamond tennis bracelet and a Houdini box that once belonged to the great Harry H. When searching for clues, Randall discovers one of the owners, Lucas Finch, dead inside a prop that was to be used in the magic show with his brother Taft. Along with his roommate and psychic friend Camden, Randall sets out to solve three mysteries among a group of magicians trained to provide ongoing illusions and distortions.
There are circles within circles in this mystery and the low-key detective Randall is just the fellow to see his way through the maze. He skillfully talks plain English with suspects and gradually unravels the tangle of mystery clues. Randall is a totally believable character, as is his sidekick Cam. Both men are in long-term relationships but are reluctant to commit to a marriage, each with his own reasons and excuses. There is also a memory-deficient old man in the mix and he will spring a surprise for readers wondering why he was tossed into the fruit salad of characters. I found Now You See It to be a delightful read and Jane Tesh to be a skillful author/sleuth.
