When I think of the plot, characters, and even the writing style of Nothing Personal by Larry Temple, the word “creepy” springs to mind. That’s not a negative comment. Let me explain: In all the psychological thrillers I’ve read, never have I come across a creepier predator than Duke, trained by his even creepier father in the art of stalking, kidnapping, torturing, and killing women. Duke and his father consider this father-son bonding pastime as playing games, and all games have rules which must be followed…no exceptions allowed.

In what he sees as a tribute to his father’s brilliance, Duke kidnaps seven young women celebrating the upcoming nuptials of Olivia. Over the course of about 3 weeks, what he does to these 7 friends is as creepy as it gets. Duke has been so well-trained by dad that he keeps the FBI running around in circles and when readers finally learn his identity it’s both a shock and, well, creepy. Duke’s dad would be so proud of his son!

Now one more thing, why do I say even the writing style is creepy? Well, just like Duke, this story creeps up on readers, slowly pulling them into the plot and characters. For several chapters you begin to feel like the terrified young women, wondering day after day when something will happen that explains their dreadful incarceration. But when Duke chooses to fill everyone in, the creepiness quickly evolves into a thrilling page-turner you never quite expected and won’t be able to put down. The plot, characters, and style are unique. Very clever writing, Larry Temple!

Seven young women disappear during a bachelorette party, with few clues left behind. As the days turn into weeks, the women are engaged in a sadistic game where their captor uses them to send messages to the outside world. FBI agent Laura Spencer works tirelessly to find some clue that will lead her to the kidnapper and release these women from this cruel game, but finds herself falling down a complex hole of references to killings that happened forty years ago. Is this current crime tied to the missing women? Is it the same person on one last spree, or did this person leave behind a protege? Larry Temple takes you on an unbelievable journey between the tortured women and Laura Spencer's attempts to find the missing women and end this sadistic game in Nothing Personal.

Nothing Personal is a wonderful suspense novel told from multiple points of view to give you a complete story from all points of view. The complexity of the relationship amongst these seven women is tried and tested as secrets are revealed and more women are released from the game to send their messages into the world. The intriguing tale of Agent Spencer's own personal struggles that cause her frustration when combined with the current case add another element of intrigue and suspense to this story. Larry Temple has done a wonderful job of creating a compelling, interesting story that you won't want to put down. An excellent novel that begs to continue in a sequel. I highly recommend this book.

Nothing Personal is a work of fiction in the thriller and suspense genres. Penned by Larry Temple, it is aimed at older readers due to scenes of intense threat and implied torture. The book follows an investigation by FBI agent Laura Spencer as she races against time to rescue a lunatic who has captured seven women in a sadistic game. Whilst Laura follows a lead about a cold case with a possible connection to the present day, the women trapped in the madman’s clutches fight for their survival as the message their captor is trying to share slowly comes into focus.

Author Larry Temple delivers a fast-paced and suspense-filled thriller that will have you struggling to put the book down. The thing that I enjoyed most about this novel was the author's ability to create twists that felt believable and consistent whilst still shocking and surprising me. Temple has a keen sense for creating atmosphere, which builds tension and delivers clues through clever dialogue and scenic description. I felt Laura Spencer was a well-thought-out character, who was brave and resourceful, and Temple did a fantastic job of making me root for her. Nothing Personal is a fresh take on a popular genre and one that you will remember long after putting the book down. I would not hesitate to recommend this novel to fans of nail-biting mysteries and especially those readers who enjoy crime stories with twists and turns you will not see coming.
