Not Violating HIPAA: Baseline combines medical fiction and alternate history and is an anthology of related short stories. It is best suited to the mature adult reading audience. It was penned by Chris P Jackson in a slipstream pulp style that will resonate with fans of 80s culture and vivid, offbeat storytelling. This charming collection of events and vignettes takes place at the Marquis University Hospital, on an island off the coast of a North America that’s a little different from our own. As we explore the battles that the intrepid medical staff engages in with their patients, a theme emerges about family connections, living through trauma, and the bonds we make in unexpected places.
Chris P Jackson takes bold readers on a fantastic journey through a web of interconnected ideas, people, and emotions in this superb collection. I love conceptual work, and entering New Sealland gives you that because the work is so inwardly referential that it starts to make everything feel similar and cohesive. You can essentially jump in anywhere with these tales, which I found to be a unique experience, and yet everything fits together once you know the other patients, doctors, and especially nurses on the staff. The medical content of the stories is detailed, intriguing, and sometimes eye-opening, but it felt relevant to the plot and enhanced the atmosphere and tension of many of the stories. I would not hesitate to recommend Not Violating HIPAA as a brilliant introduction to the talented storytelling and interweaving of tales from this author.
