Nola the Nurse: Let's Talk About Germs is the first volume of The Germy Series, a book series that explores germs. This is a children's educational picture book by Dr. Scharmaine Lawson and was illustrated by Marvin Alonso. As you would expect, this installment of Nola the Nurse educates children on the topic of germs. We are introduced to Nola by the narrator, who explains that Nola is the daughter of a nursing practitioner. This explains how Nola is well-versed on the topic of health. The vibrant illustrations help paint a clear picture of germs. It shows what they are, where they are, and what they can do. The artwork also helps illustrate how to prevent oneself from becoming sick from germs.
The book is presented in an interview format. The narrator introduces Nola and the subject, but then also asks Nola questions. Nola responds and demonstrates what one should and should not do when dealing with germs. Dr. Scharmaine Lawson has created Nola's character in such a manner that both children and adults can easily understand the subject she is trying to convey. Nola gives helpful tips to readers, like coughing into your sleeve or arm instead of your hand and singing 'Happy Birthday' while you wash your hands. Nola the Nurse: Let's Talk About Germs is the perfect book to share with young children, especially those who are just entering or returning to school during this time.
