After a failed start-up, Daniel moves into a new apartment with diverse neighbors and works mediocre online jobs. He hopes this is the beginning of a new life. Unfortunately, his neighborhood is too noisy, and he starts to spin out of control. Sofi, a new neighbor who plays classical music, makes him calm for a while, but she leaves, and Daniel reverts to his old ways. Dreams of noisy machines haunt him, and his senses make him feel sounds. The most irritating are the kids who skateboard in the street. Daniel starts to have violent thoughts of killing them, but can he go through with this plan? Get a copy of Noise by John Westren to find out.
I loved reading Noise because it has a unique plot and interesting characters. John Westren grabbed my attention from start to finish, and I loved reading about Daniel’s inner turmoil. I could feel his growing frustration with the sounds around him and knew he would snap. I did not know how or when, but this anticipation added suspense to the story. I loved the unpredictable nature of the plot. The ending shocked me but made a lot of sense. The book is well written with a smooth flow and casual tone. Characters have in-depth conversations about social issues affecting their community and the world. They speak of mental illnesses, wealth disparity, politics, gun control, and many more topics. It is refreshing to read about these topics in a story that challenges your psyche about the state of humans today. I highly recommend this book to anyone that loves thought-provoking stories.
