No, You're Crazy by Jeff Beamish tells the story of Ashlee Sutton, a troubled teenager diagnosed with Cotard's syndrome, a condition in which sufferers believe they are dead. She claims to be clairvoyant, a psychic, which is seen as another of her delusions for which she has been prescribed Seroquel, an antipsychotic medication. However, her psychic abilities allow her to look into the future. When she uses this ability to help her heroin addict father win big at the casino, and when his cash from winning leads to a fatal heroin overdose, things start spiraling further out of control. Will her grandfather, whom she had never met before now, help to find Ashlee, who has gone missing, and will they conquer the odds of escaping those trying to exploit Ashlee for her unique talents, or will humanity and family prove to be blighted as Ashlee first believed?
No, You're Crazy exceeded my expectations as a novel in the thriller category. It is an intriguing, fast-paced story that not only thrills but also makes me question my belief systems, the nature of what we call reality and other preconceptions, not only about life but also about my mental state or illness. Jeff Beamish delves deeply into issues such as prostitution, drug abuse, sexual misconduct and abuse, and the nature of the realities of what we perceive to be our life stories. I found it an enthralling read that will stay with me for a long time. I recommend it to everyone, as long as you understand that it is a novel that cuts straight to the bone of your preconceptions about life and will challenge you.
