I was as intrigued by the disclaimer as the premise for this title. It explains that No Nursery Rhyme by Violet Reigns is an adult tale that some readers might find shocking. As a reader who has been around the block a few times, I was game to see if it could deliver. What I did not expect was a book with strong narrative construction and accomplished writing. Both seem to have fallen by the wayside since the Fifty Shades phenomenon. This title also has an interesting setup for sizzle, which usually relies on setting up situations where people can have sex. Here, sex is used as the setup for what becomes a complex story. In a nutshell, former bad boy Conan now lives the good life because he married into money and power. However, he misses his bad-boy days because the sex isn’t so great. When he sees an opportunity to bed the apparently innocent Mary, who has just been hired at his work, he puts his comfortable lifestyle on the line for one last fling.
There’s a curious absence of strong profanity in this novella as if Violet Reigns has purposefully chosen not to use anything stronger than ‘damn.’ It gives the writing a literary quality, which is quite unusual in this genre, but the understated language also gives the stronger scenes more impact in my opinion. Books in the sizzle genre often rely on strong language and shock value to create shocking scenes, so it’s a refreshing change to see an author taking a different approach. More than anything else though, No Nursery Rhyme is an example of erotica done well, where we see a character go through a transformation in their own sexuality. Quite a twist at the end too, where the significance of the title is finally revealed.
