No Job for a Woman (The Wars of Jenny McLeod) is a work of fiction in the historical, social issues, and interpersonal drama subgenres. It is suitable for the general reading audience and was penned by author Dorinda Balchin. In this opening novel of a saga filled with love and loss during the time of World War Two, we meet protagonist Jenny McLeod in a very unfortunate situation indeed. As the daughter of a British diplomat living in Berlin in 1938, she witnesses first-hand the atrocities of the Nazi regime as the war begins to loom on the horizon. Jenny is keen to work as a frontline correspondent, though everyone tells her that the North African campaign is no place for a mere woman…
I adore works set during World War Two, especially those with the tenacity, verve, and raw power of a work like this. Author Dorinda Balchin strikes a superb balance between the gender politics of the time and the vulnerability of her central character, who is as tough as nails but also very raw and genuine in her emotional experience of conflict, prejudice, and bloodshed. The work was truly cinematic and will transport readers easily into bygone times with the startling vistas of Nazi Germany and war-torn North Africa that Balchin describes. I also felt that the dialogue was well balanced for a modern audience not to feel offended or confused, but was also authentic to harsher times. Overall, I would highly recommend No Job for a Woman as a superb historical read for fans of wartime adventures and socially conscious fiction.
